General Information:

The EIA RS-232C is one of the most widely accepted electrical standards for single-ended data transmission over short distance with low data rates.  It is the most common type of serial interface for computers, data terminals, modems, printers and so on.  However, high speed data communications over long distances and under high noise conditions, usually proves to be very difficult if not impossible with single-ended RS-232C.  The EIA RS-422 standard eliminates most of the shortcomings of the RS-232C.  It is a balanced system that incorporates differential drivers transmitting on balanced interconnecting lines to receivers with differential inputs.

Devices that require RS-422 communications and are only equipped with RS-232C ports have to convert the RS-232C signals to the equivalent RS-422 signals.

The OIC-422 RS-232C / RS-422 adapter provides this type of a conversion.  It is a compact unit that plugs into either a male or female DB-25 connector commonly used for RS-232C ports.

Serial communications can be extended up to 4000 feet with baud rates exceeding 38.4 K Baud.  Both data lines as well as control lines are converted allowing for hardware handshaking.  All communication lines are optically isolated and all of the RS-422 lines have transient voltage suppressors allowing for reliable communications in the harshest environments.  The unit can be configured to a number of operating modes through the use of easy to install plug-in jumpers.  Four red LED's located on the top of the adapter indicate the activity of all of the communication lines.
The OIC-422 adapter is powered by an external power supply.  The power supply must be capable of 8.5 to 13vdc at 150mA and can be supplied seperately.  Two power supply connectors are available:  a coax power jack available externally, or a plug-in terminal block located inside the unit.
